KARACHI: At least ten more inmates who had escaped after a jailbreak that was sparked by an earthquake in the port city have returned to Landhi Jail in Malir district for the three days of Eid ul Adha, authorities announced on Tuesday.
During an evacuation caused by the earthquake, at least 213 prisoners broke out of Karachi’s District Malir Jail.
According to reports, the event happened when prisoners were moved into the open courtyard for protection due to vibrations. The situation, however, became unmanageable during the chaos, allowing hundreds to escape.
Some inmates returned willingly, while others were arrested, according to Jail Superintendent Shahab Siddiqui. The return of the prisoners raises the total number of recovered escapees to 149, with 66 still evading capture.
Earlier, Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ghulam Nabi Memon revealed 213 inmates escaped Malir Jail, of which 78 have since been rearrested.
Sindh IG said the escaped prisoners from Malir Jail who surrender willingly will be dealt with in a lenient manner. However, he clarified that those arrested by the law enforcement officials will be dealt with sternly under the law.
Memon affirmed that a total of 213 prisoners escaped, with 78 having been rearrested so far, while approximately 138 are still missing from the jail.
