ISLAMABAD: Authorities have closed all entry and exit points to both Islamabad and Rawalpindi because of a bomb explosion that destroyed an Imam Bargah in Islamabad today, which caused major travel disruptions and increased security measures throughout the twin cities.

Officials have advised residents and commuters to stay home until they receive further updates. A suicide bomber detonated an explosive device inside a mosque located in Tarlai, Islamabad, during Friday prayers, which resulted in multiple fatalities and extensive injuries.

Local police and emergency officials confirmed that the blast occurred at the entrance gate of the Shia place of worship when worshippers had gathered for prayers.

Emergency status was declared by hospitals throughout the capital because they had to treat over 80 wounded people who arrived for medical care. Authorities have confirmed that at least 15 people died while multiple others sustained injuries, which means that the death toll will likely increase.

Rescue teams, together with police forces and paramilitary units, have established a security perimeter around the explosion site while conducting protective operations throughout the surrounding region.

The Islamabad Deputy Commissioner ordered the closure of major access points, which included both highways and essential interchanges that connect to Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

The authorities established checkpoints with containers and barricades, which now restrict all movement through designated entry and exit points to ensure public safety.

Security officials continue to investigate the attack while an investigation team works to determine the facts of the incident. Emergency services remain active as they assist injured people and protect the perimeter of their operational area.
