QUETTA: A horrific incident has shaken the internet as a young Baloch girl, identified as Sheetal, was shot dead on the orders of a tribal jirga, all for marrying the man of her choice.
A gut-wrenching video that has gone viral online shows armed tribesmen taking the girl to an isolated mountainous area. Moments later, gunshots ring out and Sheetal hits the ground. The sheer brutality, captured on camera, has sparked a national outcry, once again exposing the deep-rooted, patriarchal violence Baloch women are silently facing.
The killing, allegedly sanctioned by a jirga, a tribal council, is being described as a medieval punishment for honor killings, defying family or tribal decisions. In troubled regions like Balochistan, where jirga orders override constitutional law, such acts of violence are alarmingly common.
Following the horrific murder, journalists and activists shared the clip online on social media, claiming that the girl was killed for marrying someone of her own free will. The posts gathered online campaigns and demands for justice.
Some said the Balochistan government had failed to protect women, while others raised questions such as how many more girls will be killed for choosing their own will before the system wakes up?
The incident adds to a long list of gender-based atrocities that have gripped the southwestern region, where women’s freedoms are routinely crushed under the weight of tradition and fear.
Sheetal’s case is not just about one girl. It is about generations of Baloch women whose voices have been silenced and whose lives are considered irreplaceable.
