ISLAMABAD: Torrential rains across Pakistan over the past week have led to at least 30 deaths and numerous injuries, causing significant damage to life, property, and infrastructure.

Heavy downpours have affected plain and hilly areas in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Sindh, and Punjab, leading to flooding and landslides.

In KP, nine people lost their lives in various rain-related incidents, including four who drowned in floodwaters in Karak city. Rescue teams recovered their bodies from the raging waters.

In the North Waziristan district, a roof collapse due to heavy rain resulted in injuries to several individuals, including women and children.

Balochistan has reported the highest number of casualties, with 12 people killed in separate incidents. The Province also saw 32 people injured and 263 houses damaged, with 91 destroyed.

Rainwater inundated homes and shops in low-lying areas like Mirpur Khas and Dadu and caused structural damage to flood protection embankments and newly constructed bridges.

The heavy rains have severely impacted Balochistan’s roads and low-lying areas, including Chaman and Sibi. Infrastructure damage includes 312 acres of crops 19 kilometers of roads, and the death of 106 animals. Flooding has also been reported in major rivers and torrents, including the Bolan River and Nari Headworks.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued warnings of high to very high flash flood risks in Balochistan and southwestern Punjab, advising relevant departments to take precautionary measures.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasts continued heavy rains and strong winds in various regions until August 6.

This monsoon season, which brings 70-80% of South Asia’s annual rainfall, has already resulted in the deaths of at least 30 people across Pakistan. In Lahore, rainfall has reached 360 millimeters, setting a 44-year record. Pakistan remains highly vulnerable to extreme weather and climate change, with past floods in 2022 causing extensive damage and displacing millions.
