WASHINGTON: Donald Trump is nearing his second term as US president, and many Pakistanis are speculating that the Republican leader’s return to the White House could lead to the release of Imran Khan, who has been in jail since August last year.

The growing hope comes from the positive relationship between the PTI founder and Donald Trump during the latter’s first term, with some supporters believing that diplomatic support could be crucial to Khan’s release, whose cases have been overcrowded. During his presidency, Trump and Imran Khan held several high-level meetings, including one at the White House, where Trump called Khan a “good friend”.

Experts see it differently, saying the talks focused primarily on Washington’s foreign policy goals, including Khan’s role in negotiating with the Afghan Taliban over a US withdrawal from war-torn Afghanistan.

The PTI chief has a significant following in the US and other countries as many of his supporters believe that Trump can use his influence to advocate for Khan’s release.

Amidst these hopes of Khan’s fans, Donald Trump has not shared a single word on Khan’s situation during his presidential campaign. Those who covered the US presidential election, and the Trump campaign, said that detaining Imran Khan was unlikely to be on Trump’s list of priorities.
