LAHORE: Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has criticized the Lahore High Court (LHC) for the suspension of the Punjab Protection of Ownership of Immovable Property Act 2025. On Tuesday, she said the court’s move could help the land grab mafias and find favor in the eyes of the people for the judiciary.
“The suspension appears to benefit high landowners more than the common citizen,” said CM Maryam. “The law was designed for the benefit of poor and vulnerable property owners, and it had a time frame of 90 days for resolving land disputes, which previously took many years,” she added.
The Act also specified harsh penalties for land grabbing, which included a 5-10-year imprisonment term, and formed Fast Track District Dispute Resolution Committees (DRCs) for speedy disposal of the cases.
The LHC stayed the operation of the law and directed the reversal of the transfer of properties made in compliance with this legislation. Cases involving the validity of property documents, the role of revenue officials, as well as the powers of the DRCs, were raised by Chief Justice Aalia Neelum. The court felt that the legislation had the potential to demote civil judges and elevate officials at the cost of citizens’ rights.
