LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Wednesday launched the ‘Apni Chhat Apna Ghar‘ housing scheme, designed to offer houses at accessible installment plans, and a simplified application process.

Addressing a launching ceremony, CM Punjab said there’s no place like home. “Those who have their own home, their own roof, they don’t understand what it is like to be homeless.”

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz added that the housing project is aimed at addressing the housing needs of low-income families. Under the initiative, low-income people including workers and laborers will be able to own their houses.

Who is eligible for ‘Apni Chhat Apna Ghar’ scheme

To benefit from the program, the applicant must be a resident of Punjab, belong to a low-income family with an income of less than Rs60,000, and be a government employee without existing homeownership.

“Owners of 1-5 marlas of land in urban areas and 1-10 marlas in rural areas would receive interest-free loans of up to Rs1.5m from the Punjab government to build homes,” she added.

Payment Plan for ‘Apni Chhat Apna Ghar’ scheme

Maryam Nawaz added that the loan would be paid back over a period of seven years. “There is no need to pay for the first three months,” the CM said, adding, “Those who take the loans will have to pay a maximum monthly installment of Rs14,000.

“I have kept the installments at Rs14,000 because people need to establish a monthly budget, pay children’s fees and utility bills, and buy food and medicine,” she said.

Apni Chhat Apna Ghar scheme aims to build over 3,000 homes in each district, focusing initially on five major cities including Multan, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Sargodha, and Rawalpindi. In Lahore, the first phase will see the construction of 5,000 homes near Raiwind Road.
