KARACHI: A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 on the Richter scale struck Karachi on Monday afternoon, with tremors felt across various areas of the city.
According to the Seismological Center, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 19 kilometers, with its epicenter located 75 kilometers north of Karachi. Although there were no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties, residents in several areas reported feeling the tremors.
This earthquake comes after another quake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale hit Swat and its surrounding areas earlier. The earthquake’s depth was recorded at 166 kilometers, with its epicenter located in the Hindu Kush Mountain range.
Tremors were felt across Swat, Mingora, Lower Dir, Chitral, and adjoining regions, causing brief panic among residents, but no damage or casualties were reported.
In recent months, Pakistan has experienced several earthquakes, including a 5.4-magnitude quake in September 2024 that was felt in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab.
The National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC) confirmed that tremors were felt in Islamabad and parts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The earthquake had its epicenter near DG Khan, with a depth of 10km and a magnitude of 5.7.
