Election 2024: Polling closure and when will be results announced?

In the midst of rampant inflation, an increase in violence, and allegations of election manipulation, tens of millions of Pakistanis are casting ballots to choose a new administration.

The polling started Today, 8 February 2024 at 8 AM and it will carry on to 5 PM. Election coverage guidelines restrict about what can be said about candidates, campaigns, and opinion polls before polling ends. The results will start to announce from respective constituencies onwards from 6 PM after the polling ends, but the total results would be compiled by tomorrow 9 February 2024.

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif is a candidate. Numerous experts claim that this is Pakistan’s least credible election ever. In the minutes leading up to the election, Pakistan likewise cut off mobile connectivity. Although data and phone services have been interrupted, WiFi networks seem to be operational.

A spokeswoman for the interior ministry claimed that the action was necessary for security concerns, citing recent terrorist attacks in the nation.

Approximately half of the 128 million voters who are registered to vote are under the age of 35. Only 313 of the over 5,000 candidates that will be considered for selection are women.

Prior to the election, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) (PML-N) were seen as the two main contenders.

Selecting candidates from Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has become more challenging, though, as the party was prohibited from running its candidates using the cricket bat symbol. In a nation where over 40% of the population cannot read, electoral symbols are extremely important.
