Electricity bill set to surge: Rs 1.64 per unit hike proposed for February

ISLAMABAD: With the recent hike in petroleum prices, the electricity prices are also expected to rise in Pakistan.

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted its request to increase the prices of electricity in the country by adjusting the fuel prices in February. The request is expected to be reviewed tomorrow.

If approved, the prices of electricity in Pakistan are expected to rise by Rs 1.64 per unit, which will add over Rs 14 billion to the total electricity bills of the people in Pakistan, including Karachi.

According to CPPA data, 7.696 billion units of electricity were generated in February, and 7.427 billion units of electricity were supplied to the distribution companies (discos) at Rs 8.37 per unit.

The total cost of electricity generation in February is Rs 8.15 per unit, and the reference price is Rs 6.73 per unit.
