ISLAMABAD: In a significant move, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has expressed his support for a resolution passed by the Senate, advocating for a delay in the upcoming general elections scheduled for February 8.

Speaking to a private news channel, Maulana Fazlur Rehman emphasized that the delay would not adversely impact the democratic process, considering the prevailing security situation in the country. The resolution, introduced by independent Senator Dilawar Khan and endorsed by the Upper House, highlighted concerns about extreme weather conditions in hilly areas and the deteriorating security landscape.

While the resolution faced criticism from major political parties, including PPP, PML-N, and PTI, JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman defended the stance, citing the lack of a visible election environment, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan due to ongoing security threats.

Expressing concerns about the security situation, Maulana Fazlur Rehman stressed the need for authorities to address the seriousness of the circumstances. He called for the creation of a conducive environment to facilitate election campaigns without compromising the safety of participants.

Despite supporting the resolution for a potential delay, Maulana Fazlur Rehman affirmed that if the elections proceed as scheduled, JUI-F would actively participate and not shy away from its democratic responsibilities.

This development underscores the importance of prioritizing security and stability in the electoral process, reflecting a collective effort to ensure a fair and secure environment for democratic activities in Pakistan.
