Former Sindh governor Kamaluddin Azfar breathes his last

KARACHI: Former Governor Sindh and Senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Kamaluddin Azfar passed away at age of 95, according to family.

He was admitted to Ziauddin Hospital, where he breathed his last due to prolonged illness. His funeral timing shall be announced upon the arrival of his sons from abroad.

He joined the party in the early days of it and was a close aide of former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. He also acted as the president of PPP Karachi.

He serves as senator from Sindh but resigned after being appointed as Governor of Sindh in 1995 by the then Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. He also served as the Finance Minister of Pakistan.

Kamal Azfar was also a legal expert and had authored several works on constitutional law and governance. His colleagues often referred to him as a “gentle statesman” with a deep understanding of Pakistan’s political and legal framework.

“Shrewd and seasoned politician whose services will always be remembered,” said the Chief Minister of Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, upon the demise of ex-PPP leader.

Mr Shah extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the departed soul’s elevation in ranks. “Kamal Azfar’s political insight and dedication to democratic values left an indelible mark on Sindh’s political landscape,” the statement read.
