ISLAMABAD: Major changes could be in the offing for government housing for federal employees, as a proposal to replace old government homes with ground-plus-two buildings is currently being weighed.
Officials confirmed that an initial draft for the new housing plan has been prepared.
In a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Housing and Works, the officials briefed members on the concept regarding the demolition of the outdated government homes and the construction of multi-storey units in their place.
The Ministry of Housing elaborated that the plan would increase the number of residential units for employees. The draft is yet to be finally approved.
Officials said that government housing shortages worsened after a ban on new construction was imposed in 1995. Meanwhile, issues related to sectors I-12 and I-16 also remain unresolved.
Members also pointed out the issues of projects that have been continuously delayed and incomplete at different state institutions. Member Aqeel Anjum stated that the issue is not restricted to one project but instead encompasses the whole public system, as the commitments from different departments, including Railways, CDA, and others, remain unfulfilled.
The parliamentary committee visited the Peshawar Housing Project as well. The Ministry of Housing informed that the scheme launched in 2019–20 has already become operational, and work is also in progress in the Federal Employees Housing Project. The officials further said that future allotments would be done through electronic balloting.
