Government, opposition agree on appointment of opposition leader

ISLAMABAD: The government and the opposition have reached an agreement to appoint an opposition leader to the vacant seat after the disqualification of the opposition leader, Omar Ayub, in the National Assembly.

According to sources, Mahmood Khan Achakzai will be the only candidate from the united opposition, and the Speaker of the National Assembly has assured his appointment as the opposition leader.

Earlier, a PTI delegation met with Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and submitted the formal nomination of Mahmood Khan Achakzai for the opposition leader.

The meeting was attended by Barrister Gohar Ali, Asad Qaiser, Aamir Dogar, Iqbal Afridi, and Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry.

Chairman PTI Barrister Gohar Ali, while talking to the media, said that the opposition leader will be appointed by Thursday, and the Speaker can issue a notification whenever he wants.

He added that there is no forward bloc in PTI and no political committee can change the decision of the founder of PTI, Chairman Imran Khan.

After the appointment of the opposition leader in the National Assembly, a similar process will be completed in the Senate.

Earlier, National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq announced the start of the process for the appointment of the opposition leader.

The Speaker said that after the provision of relevant documents, the process of appointing the opposition leader has now started.

The Speaker of the National Assembly read out the procedure for appointing the opposition leader in the house.

The Speaker of the National Assembly summoned the opposition members tomorrow to verify the signatures. After which, the counting of members will be carried out at 3 pm on January 14.
