RAWALPINDI: The Punjab administration has approved a major revamp of the transport infrastructure in Rawalpindi by shifting Pirwadhai General Bus Stand, along with dozens of other transport facilities, from the city towards the Rawalpindi Ring Road.

According to the plan, the authorities will shift all public transport terminals, goods transport hubs, and the Islamabad fruit and vegetable market to specified places on the Ring Road.

The officials will also seal the terminals operating inside the city at Faizabad and Chungi No. 26.

It will completely ban the entry of heavy vehicles into Rawalpindi and impound any truck or bus that enters despite the ban.

Pirwadhai General Bus Stand will be completely taken over by the Punjab government and utilized as a central terminal for inter-district, intra-city, and Rawalpindi-Islamabad routes.

The local bus services for Rawalpindi and Islamabad will start from this terminal, whose fare has been fixed between Rs. 20 to Rs. 50.

Authorities will divert transport coming from Peshawar to a terminal near Islamabad Airport, while vehicles coming from Punjab would reach the city through the Ring Road.

Traffic coming from Azad Kashmir via Murree will be stopped near Bharakahu, while traffic coming from other districts will be allowed to enter from Rawat onwards.

The government is completing the stretch of Ring Road between Rawat and the new airport and intends to do further diversions once the remaining stretches are complete.
