LAHORE: Following the Punjab government’s order to shut down educational institutions in smog-shrouded Multan and Lahore, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) has announced the closure of all universities and colleges in both cities.
The development came a day after the Punjab govt declared a “health emergency” in Lahore and Multan imposing a complete lockdown from Fridays to Sundays due to the intensity of smog.
As per the official notification, all public and private universities have been directed to shift to online classes to ensure the safety of students amid the rising air pollution level.
The notification also stated that all schools across Punjab, except Murree, will also remain closed until November 24.
Despite the closure of educational institutions, the govt also banned construction activities in Lahore and Multan for 10 days. Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb on Friday said vehicles carrying construction materials will be stopped at the entry points of the cities.
Moreover, restaurants in both major cities would operate their dine-in facility till 4 pm with takeaway services allowed till 8 pm. “We are not imposing restrictions on weddings during this smog season but are preparing for next year,” Aurangzeb said.
