Judicial Commission convenes today to name High Courts Chief Justices

ISLAMABAD: The Judicial Commission of Pakistan will meet today to appoint the permanent Chief Justice of the Sindh, Balochistan, Peshawar, and Islamabad High Courts, according to media reports.

The meeting of the commission under the chairmanship of Chief Justice Yahya Afridi will consider the three most senior judges of each High Court, as per the reports.

The names of Justice Sarfaraz Dogar, Justice Mohsin Kiani, and Justice Mian Gul Hassan Aurangzeb will be considered for the Chief Justice of Islamabad, while the names of Justice Junaid Ghaffar, Justice Zafar Rajput, and Justice Iqbal Kalhoro will be considered for the Chief Justice of Sindh High Court.

The names of Justice Rozi Khan Barich, Justice Kamran Mullakhel, and Justice Iqbal Kasi will be considered for the Chief Justice of Balochistan, while the names of Justice Ijaz Anwar, Justice Atiq Shah, and Justice Arshad Ali will be considered for the Chief Justice of Peshawar High Court.

Notably, the Judicial Commission has 13 permanent members; however, for the Chief Justice of the High Court, the number of members of the commission will be 16, while the Chief Justices will be appointed by a majority of at least 9 members.

The Chief Justice of Pakistan, 4 judges of the Supreme Court, the Attorney General, 2 government members, and 2 opposition members will participate in the Judicial Commission.

In addition, Ahsan Bhawan will represent the Pakistan Bar in the Judicial Commission, Roshan Khursheed Bharocha, nominated by the Speaker of the National Assembly, will also participate, while for the provincial Chief Justice, the provincial law minister, a representative of the High Court Bar and a former judge of the High Court will participate.
