Karachi witnesses 5,960 street crime incidents in August

KARACHI: Karachi has seen a surge in street crimes recently with a total of 5,960 incidents of snatching and theft of mobile phones, motorcycles, and cars reported from the port city in August 2024.

According to the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) report, 23 cars were snatched at gunpoint, while 150 cars were stolen. Additionally, 656 motorcycles were snatched, and 3,385 others were stolen from various areas of the metropolis during the last month.

Moreover, muggers snatched 1737 mobile phones from citizens, while 3 cases of kidnapping for ransom and 6 cases of extortion were also reported during the same period, the CPLC report said.

Earlier on August 10, police reported that Karachi witnessed a staggering surge in street crimes, with over 44,000 incidents reported in just the first seven months of the year 2024.

The majority of the crimes involved the theft of motorcycles in the metropolis.

More than 31,000 incidents of motorcycle theft and snatchings were reported in the said period along with over 1,000 cases of car theft and snatching.
