KARACHI: A man has been booked in the case related to the alleged harassment of a polio worker in Karachi’s Surjani Town area, police said on Saturday.

The first information report (FIR) was registered on a complaint of a female polio worker at the Surjani Police Station under sections 294 and 509 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

On December 18, a man exposed himself to a female polio worker and harassed her while she was administering polio drops at a flat in the afternoon in Surjani Town.

The first information report was registered at the Surjani Police Station under sections 294 and 509 of the Criminal Procedure Code, which pertain to obscene acts and sexual harassment.

Following the complaint, police initiated an investigation into the matter.

The news came days after a polio vaccination team and policemen guarding them came under attack in Karachi’s Korangi. Two police officers and two polio workers were injured when a family resorted to violence.

Upon receiving the information, a large contingent of police arrived at the scene and arrested the suspects.

The federal government has launched a four-day mass anti-polio campaign nationwide that aimed at covering 143 districts, with over 400,000 polio workers aiming to immunise more than 45 million children over the age of five.

Pakistan has seen a surge in polio cases this year, recording 64 this year compared with six in 2023, and the latest case was also recorded in Sindh, of which Karachi is the capital.
