Karachi police arrests two individuals for ‘refusing’ anti-polio drops

Nazimabad police arrests two individuals for ‘refusing’ anti-polio drops

KARACHI: In a major step to combat polio, two people were arrested in Karachi for refusing to vaccinate their children against the incapacitating disease.

Reports stated that the Nazimabad police arrested Saad Ashraf and his worker Shan for obstruction in state matters. The arrest was made during the ongoing nationwide immunization drive against polio targeting an estimated 45 million children in the country.

Polio is still posing a challenge in Pakistan by endangering public health. On December 3, it has been reported that about 59 polio cases have occurred in Pakistan in 2024.

Polio is a potentially deadly virus that causes life-long paralysis in patients. With this in mind, the authorities have stepped up the pressure to comply with vaccination programs and eradicate polio.

This ongoing vaccination campaign is the last of the year so it is imperative that parents and caregivers cooperate with the health workers to ensure the success of this program.

The Pakistan Polio Eradication Programme has been standing hard against the disease, undertaking many mass vaccination drives every year. Yet there remain challenges from vaccine hesitancy, a vast swath of misinformation, and security threats.

However, accomplishments have been achieved in recent years, reducing polio’s caseload. Unfortunately, polio remains endemic in Pakistan along with Afghanistan. The global health community is working to help the government of Pakistan face the challenges so that every child can be vaccinated against polio.
