LAHORE: A petition has been filed in a court in the Punjab capital to register a case against Defence Minister Khawaja Asif over controversial remarks against a historical figure, Mahmud Ghaznavi.

The petitioner maintained that the minister tried to defame Ghaznavi and demanded action against him.

On which the court sought a report from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in this regard and issued a schedule for hearing later this month.

The controversy began when Khawaja Asif described Mahmud of Ghaznavi, who is famous in Pakistan’s historical narrative, as “a mere looter”.

He made these remarks during a television interview that stunned many in the country where textbooks celebrate the rain of Mahmud Ghazni on the Somnath temple in India in 1026.
