CAPE TOWN: South Africa have named an experienced 15-man squad for next month’s Champions Trophy in Pakistan, with 10 players who played in the last World Cup in India in late 2023.
Temba Bavuma captains the team that plays pool games against Afghanistan in Karachi on February 21, against Australia in Rawalpindi on February 25 before returning to Karachi for their final Group B match against England on March 1.
Enrich Nortje, who was ruled out of the World Cup due to injury, is returning to the team after recovering from a left foot injury.
Fellow fast bowler Lungi Ngidi was ruled out of the recent home series against Pakistan due to a back injury but has been included in the squad.
“This squad has a lot of experience, many players have consistently performed in high-pressure situations. That kind of experience is invaluable in a tournament like this,” said coach Rob Walter.
“We have been able to retain the core group of our 2023 World Cup squad, while adding fresh talent.
“Our recent performance shows that we are capable of reaching the final stages of global tournaments. We are eager to take the next step and go even further in our pursuit of the coveted silverware,” he told a virtual press conference.
