LAHORE: Good news for the farming community of Punjab as Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz inaugurated the second phase of the High-Power Green Tractor Programme, personally dialing the winning numbers of selected winners as 9,500 tractors were distributed in a highly expected draw.
At the time of the ceremony, the Secretary of Agriculture informed the CM about the scheme, detailing how farmers with seven acres or more can be given tractors with 75 to 125 horsepower, to which top-of-the-line models are offered with a whopping Rs1 million subsidy. The program will provide 20,000 tractors, of which 10,000 will be medium-power models (50–65 horsepower) subsidized at half a million apiece.
The response was overwhelming. 734,000 farmers applied, of which 282,000 qualified for the draw. Nearly 98% of applicants opted for locally manufactured tractors, highlighting strong support for domestic models.
On a personal note, CM Maryam Nawaz also phoned a number of lucky winners, such as Mohammed Ashiq from Kasur, to break the news to them.
Speaking in an informal manner, she told them, “Ki haal ae? Tusi tractor waste apply kita si. Tuhanu mubarakbad waste phone kita ae” (How are you? You had applied for a tractor. I phoned to wish you congratulations).
Raja Riffat Abbas of Attock was the first person to receive a tractor, followed by Nuzhat Parveen and Mian Naseer. The Chief Minister reiterated that the scheme shows her government’s determination to bring the state’s agriculture up-to-date and equip farmers with useful, affordable instruments to enhance productivity.
The scheme not only vows to revolutionize agriculture in Punjab but also highlights the government’s commitment to its support for farmers, as modern machinery and bountiful subsidies guarantee a brighter future for the province’s agriculture.
