KARACHI: In a significant occurrence, a rehabilitation center was besieged by angry groups of people demanding to set drug addicts admitted in the rehabilitation center free in Karachi.

Reportedly, the groups of people surrounded a rehabilitation center in Orangi Town, Karachi, and allegedly freed 127 patients receiving treatment for drug addiction.

The groups of people ransacked the facility, assaulted its staff members, and damaged a police mobile unit to shambles. The Sunshine Rehab Center, which was targeted in the incident, is financed and operated by a Sindh Police officer named Abdul Khaliq Ansari.

When the incident occurred, 10 to 12 staff members were attending to patients in Orangi Town, Karachi. The management of the rehab center in Karachi has given a formal statement to the police, which is now in the process of registering an FIR and looking for the escaped patients.

During the initial stage of the investigation, however, the Mominabad Police Station’s SHO said that the assault may not be the result of drug dealers but of an angry resident.

He stated that the neighborhood has been incensed by the patients, whom they allege are thieves and criminals, which may have incited the riot action.
