ISLAMABAD: The Speaker of the National Assembly (NA), Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, penned a letter to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the issue of a huge increase in the salaries of the Speaker NA and the chairman Senate.
According to sources, the Speaker wrote the letter to the PM after the criticism by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif.
The Speaker NA has requested the Prime Minister to settle the issue of the increase in salaries, as per the sources.
The letter states that the Speaker has taken the stance that he has no connection with the issue of salaries, and he has no interest in it.
The sources further said that Speaker Ayaz Sadiq avoided responding to Khawaja Asif’s allegations and took the position that the Prime Minister will take a decision on this matter.
In the post-budget press conference, a media reporter had questioned the sharp increase in the salaries of the Chairman of the Senate and the Speaker of the National Assembly, to which the Finance Minister had stated that the reason for increasing the salaries of the Chairman of the Senate and the Speaker from 2.5 lakh to 2.1 million was the lack of increase for 9 years.
Later, Defense Minister Khawaja Asif had called the Speaker’s salary of 2.1 million a financial obscenity, while the Prime Minister also took notice of the matter.
