ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has set a record for the biggest recovery as more than Rs 11.5 trillion was recovered in just 3 years.

According to the report presented in the Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice, NAB saved the national economy by returning 4.85 million acres of government land, while Rs 213 billion was also returned to 1.29 million victims of housing societies. Assets worth Rs 85.4 billion were frozen in the anti-money laundering operation.

In the report, NAB also presented proposals for reforms, which stated that not taking action in corruption cases of less than Rs 500 million is an obstacle to the accountability process.

The proposal includes that punishment should be given only for causing damage to the national treasury and the personal gain of the accused should not be made a condition. Fraud cases involving less than 100 victims will now be outside the jurisdiction of NAB, and the requirement to record individual statements of 100 victims is a major reason for the delay in cases.

According to the report, it is taking an average of 6 years to decide a reference in accountability courts, and only 16 out of 23 courts across the country are functional while 7 are closed. NAB has returned Rs 660 million to the budget by eliminating 238 posts as part of its austerity drive.

In 2025, NAB convicted the accused in 58% of its cases while 42% were acquitted. The agency said that artificial intelligence tools will now also be used in corruption investigations, and a special cell created for overseas Pakistanis will be further activated.
