ISLAMABAD: In a strategic move signaling his return to the political arena, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif is gearing up to contest the upcoming 2024 elections from the coveted NA-15 constituency in Mansehra. Captain (retd) Safdar, the husband of PML-N Chief Organiser Maryam Nawaz, confirmed the news, announcing that Nawaz Sharif will submit his nomination papers for the National Assembly seat by December 21.
This announcement comes amidst heightened electioneering efforts across political parties, with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) now accepting nomination papers from potential candidates for the polls scheduled on February 8, 2024. Documents obtained by Geo News reveal Nawaz Sharif’s inclusion in the list of nomination forms issued for the NA-15 Mansehra-cum-TorGhar constituency.
NA-15 is recognized as a stronghold for the PML-N, having secured victory in both the 2013 and 2018 elections. Nawaz Sharif’s decision to contest from this constituency signifies a strategic move to capitalize on the party’s historical support in the region.
The three-time former prime minister, who returned to Pakistan in October after a four-year self-imposed exile, has been actively leading the PML-N’s election campaign, eyeing a fourth term as the country’s chief executive. Notably, Nawaz Sharif recently had his sentences in the Avenfield and Al Azizia references quashed by the Islamabad High Court, solidifying his political resurgence.
However, a potential hurdle looms as Nawaz Sharif faces the need for the lifelong ban on holding any public office to be lifted, following his disqualification by the Supreme Court in the Panama Papers Case. The removal of this ban is essential for him to qualify to contest the upcoming polls.

In response to this development, PML-N’s rival, Pakistan Tehreek-s-Insaf (PTI), announced its incarcerated founder Imran Khan’s intention to contest the elections from at least three constituencies, emphasizing the competitive landscape in the upcoming polls.
The Election Commission’s adherence to the announced schedule has put to rest speculations of potential delays, providing clarity and paving the way for a charged electoral season leading up to February 8, 2024. The stage is set for a compelling political contest as key players position themselves for the upcoming elections.
