ISLAMABAD: The monsoon rains wreaked havoc in the country as 21 more people died in the last 24 hours due to rain-related incidents, according to The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
The intense downpour brought the nationwide death toll from this year’s monsoon to 242 since June 26.
At least 600 people suffered injuries in the same period due to incidents that happened during rains.
The NDMA’s National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) has also warned of more incidents by ongoing and forecasted monsoon rains until July 25.
The alert covers most parts of the country, citing a heightened risk of flash floods, riverine flooding, and landslides, particularly in northern and mountainous regions.
According to the NDMA, landslides and GLOFs pose a significant risk in mountainous areas, particularly in Gilgit Baltistan and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It also warned of potential rises in water levels in the Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, and Kabul rivers.
On the Chenab River, low to moderate flooding is likely in Marala, Khanki, and Qadirabad, while higher water flow is projected in the upper watershed of Mangla on the Jhelum River and Nowshera on the Kabul River. Water levels are also expected to rise at the Tarbela, Kalabagh, Chashma, Taunsa, and Guddu barrages.
