LAHORE: The government of Pakistan implemented its first major energy-saving initiative on public roads because rising fuel prices have created economic difficulties for the country.
Authorities have now established new speed limits for both motorways and national highways because they expect that reduced traffic speeds will result in decreased fuel usage and improved travel safety.
The National Highways and Motorway Police established a nationwide awareness campaign that informs drivers throughout the country to reduce their vehicle speed because it supports the government’s energy-saving initiatives.
The revised regulations now permit cars and Light Transport Vehicles (LTVs) to drive on motorways at a maximum speed of 100 km/h, which replaces the earlier speed limit of 120 km/h.
| Road | Vehicle | Old Speed Limit | New Speed Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Motorways | Cars & LTVs | 120 km/h | 100 km/h |
| Motorways | PSVs & HTVs | 110 km/h | 90 km/h |
| National Highways | Cars & LTVs | 100 km/h | 80 km/h |
| National Highways | PSVs & HTVs | 80 km/h | 65 km/h |
The maximum speed limit for Passenger Service Vehicles (PSVs) and Heavy Transport Vehicles (HTVs) on motorways has been established at 90 km/h, which starts from their previous 110 km/h limit.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered stronger fuel-saving measures and energy-efficient practices because the country currently faces economic challenges.
The restrictions extend to national highways as well. The speed limit for cars and LTVs now stands at 80 km/h, which replaces the previous speed limit of 100 km/h, while PSVs and HTVs must not exceed 65 km/h, compared with the previous 80 km/h ceiling.
