Pakistan set to assume presidency of UNSC in July

NEW YORK: In a major diplomatic achievement for Pakistan, the country will assume the presidency of the United Nations Security Council in July.

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in this regard.

At the meeting held at the UN Headquarters in New York, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed briefed the Secretary-General on the proposed programme of work of the Security Council in July.

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar said that Pakistan will conduct its presidency of the Security Council in an open, transparent, and consultative manner.

Antonio Guterres and Asim Iftikhar had a detailed discussion on the important and urgent issues of international peace and security on the agenda of the Security Council.

This included the deteriorating situation in the Middle East, developments in Africa, Europe, Asia, and Latin America, and their role in promoting the objectives of the Security Council through UN peacekeeping missions.

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed said that there is a strong commitment among Member States to uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and promote international peace and security through the peaceful resolution of disputes.

Ambassador Asim highlighted the importance of collective efforts to address complex global challenges and reiterated his strong support for the Secretary-General’s efforts in multilateral diplomacy and conflict prevention.
