Islamabad: The Immigration and Passports Department in Islamabad has temporarily halted the issuance of new passports due to technical difficulties termed as a “link-down,” preventing the department from entering data.

A Passport Office official mentioned that the issue originated from the Passport and Immigration headquarters, and assured that the problem would be resolved soon, allowing operations to resume. The halt in data entry for passports is attributed to the link-down.

The Directorate General of Immigration and Passports had previously taken measures to address the shortage of lamination papers following directives from the Interior Ministry. Additional officials and staff were assigned to ensure the timely delivery of new passports.

Reports from October 2023 indicated a backlog of 700,000 unprinted passports due to the lamination paper shortage in Pakistan. The suspension of passport printing, ongoing for over a week, has affected individuals planning to travel abroad. Former Interior Minister Sarfraz Bugti took notice of the issue and instructed officials to expedite the printing process to minimize inconvenience for the public.
