KARACHI: PPP’s Nisar Khuhro Wednesday won the Senate by-polls in Sindh, Geo News reported, on a seat that fell vacant after former federal minister Faisal Vawda’s disqualification.
Khuhro won the seat after bagging 99 votes out of 101. Meanwhile, two votes were rejected, media reported.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) disqualified PTI’s Vawda as a lawmaker in February after it was found that he concealed his US nationality while submitting his nomination papers to the returning officer to take part in 2018 general elections.
Shortly after the announcement of Khuhro’s win, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari took to his Twitter handle to congratulate the party member.
“Congratulations, Senator elect, Nisar Ahmad Khuhro,” wrote Bilawal.
Khuhro is currently Advisor to Chief Minister Sindh on Works and Services and also on Universities and Boards since 2019, with the status of a provincial minister.
The PPP stalwart has served as the Opposition leader in the Sindh Assembly twice — from 1997-1999 and from 2002-2007. He also held the office of deputy leader of Opposition in 1990.
He was also the provincial Minister for Planning and Development in 1993.
Khuhro was also appointed as PPP’s Larkana district president in 1990, while he is serving as the party’s Sindh president since 1993.
