LAHORE: The Punjab government is expected to announce a public holiday on August 26 (Monday) in Lahore to mark Urs of Hazrat Ali Hajveri, also known as Data Ganj Bakhsh.

Earlier, the Lahore High Court (LHC) declared a holiday on August 26 for courts to honor this significant religious event, however, the Punjab government has yet to officially declare a public holiday for this year’s Urs.

Last year, the Lahore district administration announced a local holiday on September 7 on the occasion of the 980th Urs of Data Ganj Bakhsh in the provincial capital.

Considering this, there is speculation that a similar holiday could be declared this year, possibly around August 24. If such a holiday is confirmed, it will result in the closure of all educational institutions, including schools, colleges, and universities, across Lahore on August 26.

The anticipation grows as the city prepares for the three-day annual celebrations of Data Ganj Bakhsh’s Urs, during which the Data Darbar will be beautifully illuminated.

Hazrat Ali Hajveri – aka Data Ganj Bakhsh’s – was a famous Sufi saint, Persian scholar, mystic, and theologian, who played a significant role in the spread of Islam in the Indian subcontinent.
