LAHORE: In a move to combat smog and improve the overall environment of Punjab, the Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has ordered mass plantation across the province.

According to the senior minister Maryam Aurangzeb, 48,368 acres will be planted in Punjab under the chief minister’s mission, with a target of 42.5 million trees.

The fiscal budget 2024-25 allocates Rs1,800 million with a purpose of planting 7.361 million trees in 8,496 acres; in spring alone 5.966 million trees will be planted in 6,637 acres.

The planting scheme will include special trees like moringa, pine, neem, keekar, shisham, siris, bakain, simal, arjun, plus fruit trees.

The “Chief Minister Plant for Pakistan” initiative has been estimated at Rs8,000 million until now; trees planted so far across 4,000 acres stand tall at around 2.73 million.

The afforestation drives are directed towards combating smog and air pollution while making Punjab green.

Last year, on the occasion of International Women’s Day, Maryam Nawaz planted a sapling in Sheikhupura to kick off a plantation drive.

Maryam Nawaz, accompanied by senior minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, visited Dargai Gul Forest Park Sheikhupura. On this occasion, both the chief minister and the senior minister began the plantation drive by planting saplings.

Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz took photographs under the tree with female students, scouts, and women during her tour.
