Punjab govt places 30 air quality monitors to curb smog crisis

LAHORE: In a groundbreaking development, Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb  announced that in order to cope with worst smog crisis in provincial capitals history, the Punjab government has places 30 air quality monitors across province.

These monitors will supply precise data with enhanced tracing capability beyond the limits of air pollution, and will provide potential prevention measures. The minister has also stated that 25 more air monitors will be set up in the second phase of the project.

The city-wise details of the installed air quality monitors are placed citywide including Lahore with eight monitors, Rawalpindi with three monitors; Faisalabad and Sheikhupura with one monitor each; Gujranwala with two, and Bahawalpur also with two monitors; in Sialkot, only one monitor was installed.

The air monitors are linked to the central control room of the Environment Protection Agency from where the data will also be rerouted to the global information system.

Additionally, Aurangzeb underscored the commitment of the agency towards transparency: “Instead of burying the information, we will set a tradition of sharing facts with the general public.” She further emphasized upon the air quality assessment, which is a prerequisite to arrive at any lasting resolution.
