Punjab on high alert as India releases more water into River Sutlej

LAHORE: Punjab is once again on high alert as the Indian authority releases more water into the river Sutlej, causing a sudden surge in water levels.

The Indian High Commission stated on Wednesday that India has released water into the Sutlej river due to which the Ministry of Water Resources to given a flood warning.

The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) confirmed that the increased India discharge has raised the river’s flow, predicting high levels of flood at Harike downstream and Ferozepur downstream. The authorities have been instructed to exercise precautionary measures for the security of humans and property.

The PDMA added that India released water into the Sutlej a day ago.

At Ganda Singh Wala, water discharge has now gone up to 230,000 cusecs, and at Sulemanki, a high flood is taking place with 137,000 cusecs.

Other rivers, too, are having heavy inflows. At Marala in the Chenab River, discharge is 62,000 cusecs; at Khanki Headworks and Qadirabad Headworks, 98,000 cusecs each; and at Trimmu Headworks, 250,000 cusecs.

The PDMA also reported a record-breaking flood at Panjnad, where the water level of 475,000 cusecs has been recorded.
