ISLAMABAD: In response to the growing population and rising crime rates, authorities in Punjab are planning to set up 80 new police stations across the province, including Lahore.

According to official sources, the Home Department has returned the summary for revision, raising objections to the initial proposal. The plan included setting up additional police stations in other districts as well as splitting some existing police stations.

There are currently 727 police stations in Punjab, and the proposed expansion will take the total number to 807. One of the 80 new stations was to be created by splitting an existing unit, while 79 new stations were to be set up in different parts of the province.

However, after the summary was sent back, the authorities are now expected to reframe the proposal under the term “police posts” instead of full-fledged stations. The revised summary will be submitted to the government after getting approval from the Inspector General (IG) of Punjab Police.

The project aims to improve the coverage and capacity of law enforcement agencies among the province’s growing urban and rural population.
