Rawalpindi traders announce shut down amid SCO meeting

RAWALPINDI: The city of Rawalpindi has come to a standstill as traders and businessmen have voluntarily shut down their shops and businesses for three days in light of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting taking place in Islamabad.

This decision, made by the Markazi Anjuman-e-Tajiran, aims to ensure seamless security arrangements during the high-profile event, which will host various foreign dignitaries.

A meeting held at Newtown police station, attended by senior police officials and trade representatives, discussed the security measures for the SCO conference, to show cooperation, the business community has assured the administration of their full support in the security arrangements.

The traders’ representatives agreed to keep all shops and businesses closed during the summit to enhance security. To further tighten security, the police have ordered the closure of marriage halls, cafes, restaurants, and snooker clubs from October 12 to 16.

This move aims to minimize public movement in sensitive areas. Traders who fail to comply with the orders face potential legal action, and the police have demanded short-term bonds to ensure adherence.

Earlier, today the Punjab government imposed section 144 in Rawalpindi prohibiting any political gathering, sit-in, or even pillion riding in the twin cities.

The government has also announced three public holidays in Islamabad and Rawalpindi from October 14 to 16, coinciding with the 23rd meeting of the SCO. With preparations intensifying, local authorities are leaving no stone unturned to ensure the safety of both local and foreign participants.
