KARACHI: The Sindh government and center have reached a consensus to construct the M-6 Motorway from Karachi to Sukkur via Hyderabad, which was earlier proposed from Hyderabad to Sukkur.
During the meeting at CM House, Federal Minister of Communication Aleem Khan Sindh proposed to CM Sindh that the motorway might be started from Karachi via Hyderabad to Sukkur, instead of contracting it from Hyderabad to Sukkur, to facilitate the port traffic also.
Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah agreed to the proposal and discussed the modality of its construction.
The press statement issued from Chief Minister House on Thursday said that both agreed that the M-6 motorway would be constructed through a public-private partnership (PPP). Another proposal regarding the formation of a consortium by the provincial and federal governments to construct the road on equal partnership.
The CM responded to the consortium proposal that his team would study the options and get back to the federal ministry.
The Sukkur-Hyderabad Motorway project includes the construction of a 306-kilometer long, six-lane wide, access-controlled motorway. The project is proposed as a high-speed toll road facility for efficient and safe transportation, which will start from Hyderabad and terminate at Naro Canal.
The chief minister of Sindh further urged the federal minister to approve the handing over of the Lyari Expressway to the provincial government, saying that the Sindh govt would upgrade the Lyari Expressway within six months and then open it for heavy traffic also.
The federal minister told the CM that the federal communication secretary would hold a meeting with the Sindh chief secretary to discuss the ways and means to hand over the expressway to the Sindh government.
The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, Secretary to CM Raheem Shaikh, Works Secretary Mohammad Ali Shaikh, Federal Communication Secretary Ali Sher Mehsud and NHA Chairman Shaharyar Sultan.
