KARACHI: Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon launched the Free Electric Pink Scooty Scheme to empower women and encourage green transport in the province.

Age criteria

The initiative was conceived to minimize environmental pollution and would be provided for women between 20-45 years, Sharjeel Memon said.

Driving Licence

Eligible women will be provided with 60 days to acquire a valid driving licence to be eligible for the scheme,” stated the minister while addressing the reporters in Karachi on Wednesday.

Quota for women belonging to minority communities

He further stated that a 20 percent quota has been reserved for female candidates belonging to minority groups. “We received 10,000 applications initially, out of which 150 candidates already possessed driving licences while the rest applied for learner’s licences,” Memon stated.

The minister also enlightened that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) collaborated with the Sindh government on the project.

KMC, he added, would train women in scooter riding, help them get licences, and provide the licence fee. He explained that the scooters offered under the scheme are non-transferable and cannot be sold.

Memon also pointed out the other current projects, adding that two Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects are being worked on in Sindh. Although there were difficulties in the Red Line project, work was moving quickly, and more electric buses and double-deckers will be added to the province by September, he added.
