Solar consumers cry foul as net metering credits ‘Disappear’ from bills

ISLAMABAD: Problems for solar energy consumers across Pakistan are mounting, with serious allegations that power distribution companies (DISCOs) are failing to account for millions of electricity units exported to the grid under net metering.

Sources claim that while consumers are being fully charged for the electricity they draw from the grid, the units they supply back through solar generation are not being properly credited, depriving them of the financial relief promised under the net metering system.

The issue has become more visible during the winter months, when electricity usage is typically lower. Despite reduced consumption, many solar users reportedly received unexpectedly high electricity bills, triggering widespread concern and frustration.

Consumers argue that the revised net metering policy is being used by distribution companies to mask line losses and reduce transparency. They say accurate data regarding electricity generation and exported units is not being clearly reflected on bills.

Under recent policy changes, consumers who generate electricity beyond their approved capacity may not receive credit for excess units, potentially causing financial losses.

Additionally, DISCOs have allegedly delayed the issuance of new net metering connections and agreements over the past two months, leaving thousands of applicants who have already completed legal requirements and paid demand notices waiting for meters.

Sources further claim that in the current billing cycle, exported units of several solar consumers were again not included, worsening the situation.

Solar consumers have urged the government and relevant regulatory bodies to ensure transparency in the net metering system and take immediate steps to safeguard their legitimate financial rights.
