ROME: In a recent development, three Pakistanis have been detained by the Italy authorities for their alleged role in the deadly Greece boat tragedy which happened last year.

According to the Italian media sources, following the request of Pakistani Judicial authorities, the arrest took place in three different cities of Turin, Catanzaro, and Brescia.

Earlier, hundreds of Pakistanis were killed in the June 14, 2023, shipwreck near Pylos, Greece, which is thought to have been caused by the suspects’ facilitation of illegal immigration.

Pakistan issued the warrants for the arrests, which were executed by Italy’s State Police in coordination with the International Police Cooperation Service. The detentions were confirmed by Italian appellate courts.

The individuals assisted in smuggling migrants from Pakistan to Libya, using the Central Mediterranean route to arrive in the EU via Italy and Greece, according to investigators who spoke to InfoMigrants.

According to authorities, the defendants were a part of a trafficking organization that obtained fictitious work permits to evade immigration regulations.
