RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders who were arrested outside the Adiala Jail by Punjab Police were released after a brief detention on Tuesday.
According to the Rawalpindi police, PTI central leadership, who went to the jail facility to meet party founder Imran Khan were detained for “violating Section 144” of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), which was imposed earlier this week in Rawalpindi.
The arrested leaders include the Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Omar Ayub, Shibli Faraz, Ahmed Bhachar, SIC Chairman Sahibzada Hamid Raza, and others.
According to the details, Aliya Hamza Malik was also there to meet the former prime minister, however, she escaped the arrest as she was standing at a distance from the other leaders.
The former ruling party, in a statement, said Omar Ayub Khan, Shibli Faraz, Asad Qaiser, Ahmed Bhachar, and Sahibzada Hamid Raza have been arrested outside Adiala Jail for “simply exercising their right to meet with Imran Khan, as permitted by law.”
The party said, “These arrests should alarm anyone who values the rule of law, as it shows how basic freedoms are being trampled upon.”
“All the leadership was made to wait till 3 pm and were not allowed to meet Khan. When the party leaders decided to leave the facility, they were apprehended from their vehicles,” he said.
Furthermore, Sheikh Waqas Akram wrote, “The opposition Leader of the Senate, the Opposition Leader of the National Assembly, the Opposition Leader of the Punjab Assembly, and the Chairman of Sunni Ittehad Council were dragged from their vehicles and arrested.”
Strongly condemning the “fascism”, the party’s Information Secretary demanded the immediate release of all central leadership.
