Wheat import scandal: Statistical report presented to inquiry committee

ISLAMABAD: Statistics were presented before the inquiry committee on the matter of the investigation of the wheat import scandal, here on Sunday.

According to the details, the inquiry committee was told that wheat was imported from other countries, including Russia and Ukraine. The list of importers was also presented to the committee.

Secretary Cabinet Division and Secretary Food informed the Prime Minister (PM) Shahbaz Sharif about the investigation so far.

As per the report, wheat worth 330 billion rupees was imported from August 2023 to March 2024. Pakistan anchored, in the current government, 7 lakh metric tons of imported wheat reached Pakistan at a cost of 80 billion.

Statistics revealed that one billion and 10 million dollars went out of Pakistan to import wheat from Pakistan. In October 2024, 450,000 metric tons of wheat were imported.

While in November 2023, 500,000 metric tons of wheat were imported. 35 thousand metric tons of wheat were imported in December 2023, seven lakh metric tons of wheat were imported in January 2024, and 8.5 million metric tons of wheat were imported in February 2024.

According to the report, 70 ships of wheat were imported from 6 countries. The first ship arrived in Pakistan on September 20 last year and the last ship arrived in Pakistan on March 31 this year. Wheat was imported from abroad at $280 to $295 per metric ton. Permission was also given to import 100,000 metric tons of wheat.
