ISLAMABAD: Former Test cricketer Aqib Javed has agreed to take on the role of Pakistan’s white-ball coach after Gary Kirsten resigned from the position last month.
Javed will take over the role ahead of Pakistan’s tour of Zimbabwe starting November 24 after the conclusion of Pakistan’s tour of Australia. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is expected to make a formal announcement of Javed’s appointment soon.
Following Kirsten’s resignation, the PCB has appointed red-ball coach Jason Gillespie as the interim white-ball coach for the tour of Australia. The board made the announcement in a statement, confirming Gillespie’s role for the ODI and T20 series against Australia.
Kirsten’s resignation was due to differences with the PCB, particularly over the decision to remove the coaching pair’s authority in team selection. Although Kirsten has not commented publicly, it was reported that he was disappointed by the change in power and felt sidelined by the growing influence of the current selection committee, particularly with regard to selection discussions and captaincy decisions.
