LAHORE: Chief Minister of Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated electric buses in the provincial capital on Wednesday, a move aimed at reducing air pollution and the effects of climate change.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony of electric buses, Maryam Nawaz said that the electric buses running in Punjab are environment-friendly.
The dream of making Punjab green and lush has been fulfilled in a year. “Environment-friendly buses have been imported for the convenience of the people,” she said.
Chief Minister Maryam further said that providing relief to the people is her top priority, no one is happier than Nawaz Sharif and herself when the people get relief.
A total of 27 electric buses have arrived in Punjab, and another 500 electric buses will arrive by August. The fare of electric buses has been kept between Rs 20 and Rs 35.
Talking about the facilities provided in electric buses, she said that students and disabled people will be given free cards for electric buses. The buses will also provide free Wi-Fi and mobile charging facilities.
Moreover, CCTV cameras have been installed in the electric buses, and an automatic ramp has also been provided for the disabled. He added that nine charging stations have been set up in the city.
The Punjab Chief Minister also acknowledged that the Sindh government has also started electric bus service.
He said that a plan to introduce Pakistan’s first underground tram is under consideration. Although the tram project will cost more, efforts are being made to complete it within three years.
