Former Australian cricket legend goes into coma
SYDNEY: Australian cricket’s two-time World Cup winner Damien Martyn has been admitted to a Brisbane hospital with meningitis, where his condition is critical.
54-year-old Damien Martin has played 67 Test matches and 208 ODI matches for Australia and is known for his batting style.
Martin suddenly fell ill on December 26 while resting at his home. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where doctors considered his condition serious and placed him in a coma.
Martin’s close friend and former Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist told the public on behalf of his family that Martin was being treated in the hospital.
Meningitis causes severe inflammation of the membranes of the brain and spinal cord and can be fatal if not treated promptly.
Damien Martin has been a key member of the Australian team. He played in the 1999 and 2003 World Cups and the 2006 ICC Champions Trophy.
He scored an unbeaten 88 against India in the 2003 World Cup final, despite also injuring his finger.
On social media, fans and former players are praying for Martin and hoping that he will come out of his coma soon.
