PSL 9: Multan Sultans clinch victory against Islamabad United by 5 wickets

LAHORE: In a thrilling clash at the Multan International Cricket Stadium, the Multan Sultans emerged victorious over Islamabad United in the fifth match of the Pakistan Super League’s ninth edition.

After a stellar performance by Sultans’ quicks Mohammad Ali and Abbas Afridi, who restricted Islamabad United to a total of 144, the Rizwan-led team showcased their batting prowess to chase down the target with five wickets in hand.

Skipper Mohammad Rizwan led from the front with a brisk 43 off 33 balls, setting the tone for the chase. South Africa’s Reeza Hendricks continued his impressive form, contributing a crucial 58-run innings off 46 balls.

However, it was Pakistan all-rounder Iftikhar Ahmed who stole the show with a quick-fire 18* off 17 balls, guiding the Sultans to victory in the final over of the match.

Earlier in the innings, Agha Salman and Jordan Cox formed a resilient partnership for Islamabad United, adding 68 runs in 48 balls after early setbacks. Cox’s aggressive 41 off 28 balls and Salman’s steady 52 off 43 balls anchored Islamabad’s innings.

However, the bowling duo of Abbas Afridi and Mohammad Ali wreaked havoc, ending with impressive figures of 3-29 and 3-19, respectively. Usama Mir also contributed with two crucial wickets, wrapping up Islamabad United’s innings at 144 in the final over.

The victory marks Multan Sultans’ second win in the tournament, following their convincing 55-run victory over Karachi Kings in the third match. With a strong start to their PSL campaign, the Sultans are poised to make a significant impact in the tournament.
