NEW YORK: Spain defeated defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time to lift the FIFA World Cup 2026 trophy, securing their second world title 16 years after their first triumph.
The final at New York remained goalless throughout the 90 minutes, with Spain dominating possession and creating the better chances. Argentina failed to register a single shot on target during regulation time as Spain’s disciplined defense kept Lionel Messi and his teammates quiet.
Argentina’s task became even more difficult late in the second half when Enzo Fernández was shown a red card, forcing the South American side to play the remainder of the match with 10 men.
The decisive moment came in the second half of extra time when Ferran Torres found the back of the net, scoring the only goal of the match to hand Spain the championship. Despite pushing for an equalizer, Argentina could not break through Spain’s solid defense.
With the victory, Spain became FIFA World Cup champions for the second time and successfully ended Argentina’s reign as defending champions.
Spain’s Rodri won the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player, while Argentina captain Lionel Messi received the Silver Ball. Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón claimed the Golden Glove, and young defender Pau Cubarsí was named Best Young Player.
France star Kylian Mbappé won the Golden Boot after finishing as the tournament’s top scorer with 10 goals, while Messi scored eight goals.
Spain also became the first nation to hold both the Men’s and Women’s FIFA World Cup titles simultaneously, having won the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023.
The Spanish side completed a remarkable tournament by conceding just one goal in eight matches, with no team managing to take the lead against them throughout the competition.
Meanwhile, Argentina set an unwanted record by becoming the first team in FIFA World Cup final history to fail to register a single shot on target during the 90 minutes of regulation time.
