WASHINGTON, DC: Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, xAI, introduced Grokipedia on Monday, as a competitor to Wikipedia, a site he has often charged with political bias.
The initial public version of Grokipedia, designated “0.1,” was launched with more than 885,000 articles by Monday night.
Though much smaller than Wikipedia’s English-language repository of more than seven million entries, Musk already said Grokipedia is a superior product.
On X, Musk posted that, “The mission of Grok and Grokipedia.com is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. We will never be perfect, but we shall nonetheless strive towards that goal.” He also assured that version 1.0 of the website would be “10X better” than what it is now.
The site had initially been due to launch in late September but was postponed by Musk, arguing that there was a need to “purge out the propaganda.”
This followed months of public criticism of Wikipedia, including claims that the platform is “controlled by far-left activists.” In 2024, Musk also urged individuals to refrain from donating to the site, questioning its neutrality.
In August, he debated that Wikipedia should not be utilized as a source for X’s Community Notes feature, asserting that its editorial framework was “extremely left-biased.”
Grokipedia’s content is generated through artificial intelligence, using xAI’s generative assistant Grok. An entry on Musk within the platform says he has played a role in shaping public debates on technology, demographics, and institutional bias.
It also notes criticism from what it describes as “legacy media outlets” that it claims show a systemic left-leaning slant in their coverage.
Wikipedia, established in 2001, is constructed and sustained by volunteers. It relies mostly on public contributions and is organized under an avowed pledge to express information from a “neutral point of view.”
Musk’s entry into Grokipedia puts an additional competitor in the online encyclopedia market, but only time will tell how the site will handle the issue of accuracy, bias, and editorial oversight as it grows.
